For this project, the character I designed is a reinterpretation of Alice from Alice in Wonderland. It will be used for the fabrication of a stop-motion puppet.
She wakes up in a place she doesn’t recognize, with no memory of how she got there or who she is. The only thing she knows is her name. As time passes, the environment becomes increasingly unstable, which causes her to constantly question her identity and gradually descend into madness.
The design is built around a theme of restriction and instability, with the corset and high neckline creating pressure, while the puff sleeves and skirt maintain the recognizable Alice silhouette. The proportions are slightly exaggerated to maintain a doll-like, uncanny quality.
The excessive patterns in her clothing mirror the chaos of her surroundings, while red motifs suggest both a tenuous connection and escalating tension, especially around the neck, symbolizing her internal conflict.
The color palette remains true to the original Alice colors (blue, white, and black) to ensure the character's recognizability, while the sparing use of red introduces contrast and highlights strain, mirroring the character's evolving identity and the story's underlying themes.
